HARPSWELL
An aging outhouse “like you see in old Westerns” burned to the ground Monday afternoon on Cundy’s Harbor Road.
The fire, reported just before 3:30 p.m., ignited a 40- foot-by-30-foot area of woods and drew firefighters from the Cundy’s Harbor and Orr’s and Bailey Islands fire departments, Cundy’s Harbor Fire Chief Ben Wallace Jr. said by phone from the scene.
“It was one of those outhouses like you see in old Westerns,” Wallace said, and it was still in use by residents of nearby camps.
Firefighters were still dousing the embers at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Wallace said he has no idea how the fire started, in part because “there’s nothing left to look at.”
