FREEPORT — Robert B. Stewart Jr., 91, of Freeport, died Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the VA Togus Hospice following a long illness. Son of Robert Sr. and Lillian Savage Stewart, he was born in Richmond on Dec. 30, 1921.

Robert graduated from Freeport High School in 1941. He was employed in the shipyard when he was drafted into the Army during WWII. While serving his country he saw much of Europe, Northern France, Rhineland, and the Ardennes. He was a decorated soldier earning many battle stars. He had many stories to tell and he loved to share them.

After the war, he came to Freeport and married Etta Adeline Britton, who passed away in 1999.

Robert was a longtime member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. He was dedicated to these organizations, as he was dedicated to his family. Robert worked most of his life cutting shoes in Freeport but also learned the carpentry trade. He built many homes in the Brunswick area. He built two homes for Etta and a camp at Moxie Pond where he spent time with his sons.

He is survived by son Robert and wife JoAnn of Bingham; grandson Bobby, his wife Janette and greatgrandson Forrest of Okinawa; granddaughter Mary Stewart of Bingham; son Timothy and wife Nancy of Freeport; granddaughter Eliza Damone, her husband John and greatgranddaughter Adeline of Freeport; and granddaughter Ellen Jones and her husband Andrew of Bath.

A graveside service will take place at the Burr Cemetery in Freeport at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: VA Maine HCS, 1 VA Center c/o Jodi Hardwick, Augusta, ME 04330. Make checks payable to: VA Maine Healthcare System, Patriot Place.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
