Rosemont will host class, tasting of German wines

Rosemont Market and Bakery will hold two events featuring German wines in September.

Thomas Haehn of the Von Schleinitz Winery will lead a German wine class at the SoPo Wine Co. warehouse from noon to 2 p.m. on Sept. 16.

The class is free, but reservations are required because the class will be limited to 25 people. You’ll receive directions to the warehouse when you call for reservations at 318-9699.

On Sept. 13, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Haehn will be at Rosemont Yarmouth, 96 Main St., to lead a tasting of Von Schleinitz wines.


Shaker Hill Apple Festival falls on Sept. 14-15 this year

The Shaker Hill Apple Festival will be held this year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15 at the Alfred Shaker Museum, 118 Shaker Hill Road.

Crafters will display and sell Shaker-related items. There will be a yard sale, narrated tours of the Old Shaker Village, a lobster raffle, and pony rides and games for the children.

Food will include apple pie made from fruit from trees the Shakers planted in 1920.

All proceeds go toward restoration of the former Shaker Carriage House.

Other festival sponsors will host activities as well. York County Shelter Programs will have a juried arts and crafts fair, live music, a silent auction, a pig raffle, antique car rides and a yard sale and book sale. The Bakery at Notre Dame will be open both days selling food from its lunch wagon. Proceeds from these events will benefit homeless and hungry children and families.

Giles Family Farm will have apple picking at the Notre Dame Orchards, and the Brothers of Christian Instruction will have their apple store open.

Parking and admission are free.


Maine Fare will showcase state’s farms, food, chefs

How much would you pay to take a free class on Gulf of Maine fish from chef Sam Hayward of Fore Street?

How about nothing? Hayward’s class is one of several being offered during this year’s Maine Fare, which is being held Sept. 6 and 7 and is sponsored by the Maine Farmland Trust.

Maine Fare is a showcase for Maine farms and food, and includes events such as a farmers market and midway, tastings, farming forums, local farm tours, a farm-to-table dinner and a concert by Dave Mallett. Admission is free, but some events require a ticket and/or advance reservations.

The “Explore and Experience” classes on both days are free, but seating is limited, so sign up in advance. Each class includes hands-on demos and the chance to sample foods. The classes revolve around four different themes: fresh fish, raw food, local meat and baking in wood ovens.

Chef Matthew Kenney of The Gothic will talk about raw foods at 10 a.m. Sept. 6, followed by Hayward’s class at 1:30 p.m.

On Sept. 7, chef Chad Conley of Gather in Yarmouth will be joined by Ben Slayton of Farmer’s Gate Market at 10 a.m. for a discussion of local meats. At 1:30 p.m., chef Tom Gutow will share what he knows about pasta. Finally, at 3 p.m., chef David Levi of Portland will talk about “Wildness in Maine Foods.”

Academe chefs preparing six-course menu at Blue

Chefs Brian and Shanna O’Hea of Academe, the restaurant at the Kennebunk Inn, will prepare a six-course tasting menu Sept. 8 at Blue, the restaurant at the Grey Havens Inn.

The “Toast to the Coasts” dinner will include two of the Kennebunk chefs’ signature dishes, Maine lobster white truffle pizza and Maine lobster pot pie. Other courses will include watermelon gazpacho, duck confit and roasted lamb loin.

Each course will be paired with an Austrian wine.

The dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. and costs $70 per person, excluding tax and tip.

Four-course dinner benefits Green Building Council

The Salt Exchange, 245 Commerical St., will be hosting a benefit dinner for the Maine chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council on Sept. 26.

The “Farm to Table Feast” has two ticket options: $60 for a four-course meal and $75 for a four-course meal that includes beer and wine pairings.

A reception with a cash bar will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner following at 6:30 p.m.
