To the Editor:

It is way past time to speak up in support of the Bath City Council regarding the sale of the former local hospital building.

I am saddened by the criticism and accusations made against our city government. For those who lead this effort, I believe that a “history” lesson is called for.

Bath is able to have its successful, vibrant downtown and community-minded, cohesive neighborhoods because of the many residents, business owners, city councilors and staff who have worked together in a positive collaborative manner to overcome much negativism. We are once again faced with a few vocal naysayers whose mission appears to be vindictive and aimed at “destroying government” at any cost.

Though our country and state appear to be overcome with a negative “anti- government fever,” Bath can show a better way to settle its differences and come out with a win-win for all its citizens.

Many of us recall the 1970s and ’80s, when Bath experienced a serious downward spiral as did so many communities. Unfortunately, most of the other Maine communities could not overcome the negativism. They still struggle with that demise, while Bath overcame the negative attitudes that followed and has come together to raise its community to be the envy of many, not only in Maine, but nationwide.

It is time for that spirit again. I am proud to say that Bath can always do better than the norm.

I applaud our city government — from our city manager on down — and each councilor for their ongoing efforts at keeping Bath moving forward. I believe each one representing our city upholds their position with dedication and an honest desire to do what is best for the Bath community.

I ask that those vocal few find a way forward that does away with the present name calling and negativism to work with our elected officials and city staff to constructively obtain the procedural changes that are needed and will be positive for all of Bath.
