The 2012 season was one to remember for the Lisbon High School field hockey team, which came away with its first-ever field hockey state title after downing Winthrop in the Class C championship game.
Head coach Julie Wescott returns most of her senior- and junior-laden squad, with the Greyhounds working to make it back-to-back titles.
In football, veteran leader Dick Mynahan is excited about his team, especially his young freshmen class, which may see prime playing time this season. Plus, Lisbon plays in the newly established Western Maine Class D, competing against many of its Campbell Conference opponents of the past.

Football
Coach — Dick Mynahan.
2012 highlights — 4-4 in regular season, lost 28-21 to Oak Hill in the Western C quarterfinals.
Personnel lost — Ryan Riordan (QB), Ryan Brewer (C), Casey Garrison (T), Mason Haley (RB), Brandon Hovey (TE), Kyle Sheehan (RB), Devin Pesce (T/NG).
Personnel returning — Seniors Dale Craft (G/DE), Jordan Glover (WR/DE), Brett Gravel (G), Brandon Laurelez (LB/WR), Nick McNamara (OL), Alex Bennett (C), Quincy Thompson (TB/DB), Jordan Torres (RB/DB), Robert Wood (T/DT); juniors CJ Adams (RB), Sean Ball (FB/LB), Kyle Bourget (QB/DB), Justin Collier (G/NG), Adam Desjardins (WR/DE), Andrew Golino (TE/DE), Shawn Grover (RB), Joe Philbrick (FB), Austin Proctor (QB/CB), RJ Sargent (QB/DB), Darren Wood (G/DT).
Newcomers — Seniors Jacob Johnston (DT), Justin Crocker (T/DT); juniors Daniel Westreiah (T/NG), Dylan Dall (FB/LB); sophomores Henry Adams (WR/CB), Damon Douglass (T); freshmen Tyler Halls (WR), Noah Francis (RB/LB), Canton Mattson (G), Jared Glover (FB).
Coach’s comments — “I anticipate starting some of those freshmen. We are rebuilding, having lost nearly the entire offensive and defensive lines. The freshmen are nearly 30 to 40 pounds bigger than the players in front of them. Coach (Chris) Kates did a great job with the eighth-grade team last year, and they have come in ready to play. And, there are another 40 kids playing in on the middle school team this season, so our numbers are very strong.
“This year is hard to predict. We have as good of a backfield as we have ever had, but our line is questionable right now. We have gotten stronger, and I believe we will get better every week.
“Our opener with Winthrop was originally slated to be a home game, but it got changed to a Friday night road game, which is a tough start. That place will be packed, and it will be a hornet’s nest. The Monmouth kids are sky high right now and want to prove something in that first game. If we can come out of our first four games with a 2-2 record, we will be good.”
Team overview — The schedule is certainly tough, with Winthrop/Monmouth, Boothbay and Old Orchard Beach in three of the Greyhounds’ first four contests, plus a visit to Traip Academy, and home dates with Maranacook and Dirigo, and a final road contest at Oak Hill on the docket. But, Mynahan feels once his team gels, the skies the limit.
Season opener — Sept. 6 at Winthrop/Monmouth.
Key dates — Sept. 21 (H, Boothbay Region); Oct. 19 (H, Dirigo); Oct. 26 (at Oak Hill).
Boys soccer
Coach — Dan Sylvester.
2012 highlights — 5-8-1, toppled Monmouth 2-0 in a Western C prelim; lost to Hall-Dale 7-0 in quarterfinals.
Personnel lost — Brady Fenderson (MF), Aaron Halls (F). Brett Williams (D), Andrew Gamache (GK), Mike Jenkins (D), Zach Cribbin (D), Logan Maguire (D). Mitchell Austin (MF).
Personnel returning — Seniors Kyle Whitman (F/MF), Dillon Clifford (MF), Cam Ramich (D), Tyler Bard (MF); sophomores Austin Bedford (MF), Austin Fournier (A), Nate Bergeron (GK), Jake Angelico (D), Nick Huston (MF).
Newcomers — Senior Zach Stevens (MF); juniors Mike Demerest (MF), Johnny Yim (MF); freshmen Kyle Welch (D), Nick Larette (MF/F), Josh Huston (D).
Coach’s comments — “We need to find where to put the pieces in the puzzle. What I have seen so far is that these kids are some of the hardest working kids that I have ever had. They are very gritty, especially the freshmen.
“A key for us is our goaltender Nate Bergeron. He will be one of the top goalies in the conference. He makes the saves he is supposed to make and then some. He hasn’t lost a step from last season, and the defense trusts him and that gives us an extra step.”
“I expect St. Dom’s and Hall-Dale to be the teams to beat in the MVC, and for Mount Abram to be tough.”
Team overview — Sylvester is excited to have over 25 players out this season, which bodes well for the future as the team tries to rebuild. But, the loss of 21 seniors over the past couple years means that the freshmen need to play a vital role.
Season opener — Sept. 10 (at Monmouth).
Key dates — Sept. 18 (at St. Dom’s); Oct. 4 (H, Wiscasset); Oct. 22 (season finale, H, St. Dom’s).
Girls soccer
Coach — Jake Gentle.
2012 highlights — 12-1-1, beat Hall-Dale 2-1 in Western C quarterfinals; lost to Waynflete, 4-0 in semis.
Personnel lost — Kayla Angelico (F, 26 goals last year), Gabby Ouellette (D), Chelsea Huston (F), Chantal Bisson (D/GK), Jordan Kates (D).
Personnel returning — Seniors Renae Samay-Houle (F), Jenna Clifford (MF), Olivia Bulgin (MF), Paige Galligan (MF), Shantal MacWhinnie (D), Courtney Martel (D), Delaney Ouellette (F); juniors Kailyn Hill (D), Drew Stewart (D), Loren Grant (MF), Dakota Bisson (GK); sophomore Katherine George (F).
Newcomers — Sophomores Deliah Schrieder (F), Abby Gamache (D).
Coach’s comments — “This team has the experience. The players are adjusting to new positions and new roles, and our success will ride on the ability to adapt.
“We will score as a team, with not one kid scoring 26 goals. We should be more balanced, but a big key is how we do defensively. We must neutralize our opponents and keep them outside the box. On the offensive end, when we get a chance to score, we have to bury it.
“Our opener is against St. Dom’s, which might be the team to beat in the MVC, then we go to Monmouth, another tough team. It is a hard early schedule. I also expect Wiscasset, which didn’t lose anyone, to be a top team.”
Team overview — The loss of Angelico’s 26 goals hurts, along with the leadership of former sweeper Gabby Ouellette. But, the Greyhounds have come depth, and the scoring may just come from several players, making Lisbon a tough team to play.
Season opener — Sept. 6 (at St. Dom’s).
Key dates — Sept. 27 (at Spruce Mountain), Oct. 3 (at Wiscasset), Oct. 21 (season finale, H. Oak Hill).
Field hockey
Coach — Julie Wescott.
2012 highlights — 13-0-1 regular season, beat NYA 1-0 in Western C finale; beat Winthrop 2-1 for State Class C Championship.
Personnel lost — Bailey Madore, Luci Charest.
Personnel returning — Seniors Bailey Cutler (MF), Hanna Jordan (F), Mariah Breton (D), Jenn Smith (MF), Olivia Harrington (F), Sarah Craig (F), Cassie Casey (F), Nichole Jones (F); juniors Ali Bubar (D), Michaela Bedell (MF), Molly Nicholson (F/MF), Courtney Lawrence (MF), Mia Durgin (MF/D), Arianna Kahler (F), Stevie Charest (GK).
Newcomers — Seniors Sierra O’Kane (D), Kia Coffin (D/MF); sophomore Charlotte Mooney (F/MF); freshman Chase Collier (F/MF).
Coach’s comments — “They are handling the pressure of being the defending champions, and that pressure has pushed them a little bit harder in practice and in preseason games. I was away on a family emergency, and when I came back they were working harder.
“For us, teamwork is the number one priority. We have no standouts. But, we have a solid nucleus that has a positive attitude. Having that experience helps. We are strong in every area of the game, from goaltending, to defense, to the midfield and up front. They know what it takes and just have that drive.
“In the MVC, look for Winthrop to be good again, along with Mountain Valley, Telstar and Dirigo. Our opener with Spruce Mountain, a classy team, will be a test.”
Team overview — Being the defending champion means the Greyhounds will get every team’s “A” game. This team seems prepared, and a run at back-to-back championships is feasible.
Season opener — Sept. 6 (H, Spruce Mountain)
Key dates — Sept. 13 (at Winthrop), Oct. 1 (at Spruce Mountain), Oct. 24 (season finale, H, Oak Hill).
Cross country
Coach — Hank Fuller.
2012 highlights — Nick Harriman was 12th in the State Class C meet as the Greyhounds finished ninth overall after taking fifth in the MVCs. The girls did not have enough runners to score at the state meet, with Bree Sautter and Caitlyn Bundy the top two Greyhound finishers in 47th and 49th, respectively. Sautter was fifth at MVCs, leading the Greyhounds to a fourth-place showing.
Personnel lost —Kristen Carter, Ben Kates.
Personnel returning — Girls: Senior Abby Roy; sophomores Adrianna White, Bree Sautter, Caitlyn Bundy, Ally Lycette. Boys: Junior Jeff Willey; sophomores Nick Harriman, Jordan Cole.
Newcomers — Girls: Freshmen Kaylin Le, Bailey Eveson. Boys: Junior Chris Giraldo; sophomore Brett Carter; freshmen Michael Schlotterbeck, Silas Crosby.
Coach’s comments — “We have the minimum to challenge for a state title, but I believe we can surprise some people along the way. The girls are young, but there is a solid running core here, while the boys, though mostly inexperienced, do have a top runner in Harriman, who is a legit number-one runner.”
Team overview — Though small, there are good athletes running for Lisbon this season. Barring nagging injuries, the Greyhounds may improve on last year’s MVC finishes and possibly challenge once the Class C State Meet comes around.
Season opener — Sept. 11 at Winthrop.
Key dates — Oct. 19 (MVC Championships), Oct. 26 (regional championships), Nov. 2 (state championship).
