BRUNSWICK
A Brunswick motorist blacked out Thursday while driving southbound on U.S. Route 1, causing his vehicle to veer off the road, hit a guardrail and knock down a perimeter fence that struck two women jogging on the Androscoggin River Bicycle and Pedestrian Path.
The crash was reported at 8:42 a.m. Brunswick Police Lt. Tom Garrepy said Rodman Johnson, 70, of Brunswick was operating a 2012 Toyota RAV4 south on Route 1 when he blacked out, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, drive over the shoulder, through a guardrail and hit the perimeter fence of the bike path, knocking the fence down. Witnesses said he did not hit his brakes and gradually drifted off the road.
Garrepy said the two injured joggers are Alane Callahan, 46, of Brunswick, who was transported to Mid Coast Hospital as a precaution; and Melissa Crebs, 50, of Lisbon, who was not transported.
Johnson was outside his vehicle when police arrived. He sustained an elbow laceration and was also transported to Mid Coast Hospital.
No charges are expected.
