SABATTUS (AP) — A retired police officer who used a racial slur and suggested shooting President Barack Obama in a Facebook posting resigned Thursday from all boards and committees on which he serves in town.
David Marsters submitted his resignations from the Ordinance Review Committee, Budget Committee and Charter Commission in an email in which he apologized for the actions.
The resignations came hours before Sabattus town selectmen were to meet to consider removing Marsters from all positions he held in the town. But despite the resignations, Marsters isn’t giving up his political aspirations altogether because he’s still planning to run for Board of Selectmen.
“As of this time, I am still running for selectman,” he said in an email.
Marsters, 68, was interviewed by the Secret Service and local police after making the Obama comments. Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said the comments were hateful and were the opposite of what the town stands for.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
