The Buxton Planning Board this week scheduled a hearing for public input about a request from Aceto Construction to expand its facility.

Daniel and Roberta Aceto are seeking permission for a warehouse and outdoor storage facility at 1027 Narragansett Trail (Route 202). The firm plans to excavate its site to park construction equipment further back from the highway.

“It’s going to clean up the site,” Daniel Aceto said following Monday’s Planning Board meeting.

Aceto Construction also has a future plan to build a 40-by-60-foot warehouse. But, Aceto said that warehouse construction would be “down the road.”

Aceto Construction performs jobs that include excavating, highway construction, utility work, septic systems and general contracting. The company has eight employees now, and Aceto indicated expansion would likely increase the number of workers.

The Planning Board, following the motion of Clifford Thomas and seconded by Christopher Carroll, voted 4-0 (Jeremiah Ross absent) to gather public input about the proposal.

A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, in Buxton Town Hall, 185 Portland Road. Planners already viewed the property in a site walk on July 13.

Besides Buxton’s approval, the project also requires approval by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Project engineer Andy Morrell of BH2M in Gorham presented site plans for the proposed project during Monday’s Planning Board meeting. Plans include excavation, landscape buffering and construction of a stormwater detention and fire pond.

The company plans to complete the project over time, when it is not working on projects for customers. The water detention pond would be constructed first.

Regarding the pond, Carroll had concerns about vehicle and pedestrian safety, which led to discussion of a fenced pond.

Morrell said without a fence, there would be enough distance from the road pavement for drivers to stop before winding up in the pond, and Morrell said a fenced pond could encourage children to jump in. “My recommendation is a fence isn’t needed,” Morrell said.

Keith Emery, Planning Board chairman, said a fence would inhibit cleaning out the pond. Emery favored boulders and Carroll suggested a berm to add a safety barrier.

Fred Farnham, Buxton code officer, said Tuesday the pond would be 80 feet from the edge of Route 202 and approximately 20 feet from the edge of pavement on Atkinson Road to a pond berm.

Farnham also the pond would be equipped with a fire hydrant and bollards where a fire truck would park, adding further safety.

The construction company relocated from Waterhouse Road in Gorham to Buxton in 2007, when the state bought property to build the Gorham Bypass. Daniel and Roberta Aceto live in Alfred.
