Owners of oil tanker that hit bridge want bond refunded

The owners of a tanker that struck a bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine are seeking a $2.4 million refund from the two states for the bond posted to release the vessel after the collision as well as attorneys’ fees.

The owners of the Portuguese oil tanker MV Harbor Feature say the two states are guilty of negligence and should also pay for the tanker owners’ legal costs, according to court documents filed in federal court on Aug. 26.

LePage says businesses expanding, adding jobs

Gov. Paul LePage says there is good news for Maine’s economy: Businesses are expanding their operations and adding new jobs.

The Republican governor adopted a positive tone about Maine’s business climate in his weekly radio address on Friday, pointing to some of the “success stories” for Maine’s economy this month.

LePage applauded last week’s announcement that Barclaycard will add 100 new jobs by the end of the year at its customer contact center in Wilton. Irving Forest Products is among other companies bringing job growth in Maine, with its plan to add 60 new jobs and build a sawmill at Nashville Plantation in northern Maine’s Aroostook County, LePage said.

Racing returns to runway at Loring Commerce Center

Racing is returning to the runway at the Loring Commerce Center in northern Maine.

Event director Tim Kelly said timed runs were being held Saturday and Sunday at the “Harvest Event.” It’s the first racing since motorcyclist Bill Warner died in July at the Maine Event.

The Loring Timing Association opens the runway at the former Loring Air Force Base to motorcycles and cars seeking to set speed records or to see how fast they can go.
