Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud announced his senior campaign staff Tuesday.

There may be a few surprises for those not following the campaign since the six-term congressman made his bid official. 

Matt McTighe will be the campaign manager. McTighe is perhaps best known in Maine for his efforts during the successful 2012 marriage equality campaign. McTighe, whom the campaign describes as an independent, has worked on several state and federal campaigns and ballot initiatives. 

David Farmer, a former newsman who later became Gov. John Baldacci’s communications director, will serve as the campaign’s policy and communications adviser. Farmer has stayed involved in state politics since Baldacci left office in 2010, working on the 2011 bid to restore same-day voter registration and working with McTighe on the marriage equality effort. Farmer also penned a column for the Bangor Daily News that since been suspended because of his involvement with Michaud’s gubernatorial bid.  

Michaud also picks up Lizzy Reinholt from the Maine Democratic Party. Reinholt is on loan from the party. She formerly worked for Engage Maine, a liberal activist group. Also moving over from the party apparatus is Rick Redmond, who will become the campaign’s finance director. 

Those familiar with Michaud’s first congressional bid in 2002 will notice that Peter Chandler isn’t among the gubernatorial campaign staff. Chandler, who helped the congressman edge out Republican Raye, will remain on chief of staff while Michaud completes his term in Congress. 

Michaud’s chief rivals, Republican Gov. Paul LePage and independent Eliot Cutler have already announced their plans to run in 2014. Their ceremonial kickoff is expected this fall.
