AUGUSTA (AP) — Gov. Paul LePage signed an executive order Wednesday reaffirming Maine schools are locally controlled and that students’ personal information must remain private.
The Republican governor’s order comes weeks after opponents to Common Core Standards, adopted by 45 states, announced an attempt to repeal them in Maine in November 2014.
Opponents have raised concerns the standards invade privacy and dictate decisions for local schools.
Education officials say the standards, which Maine adopted in 2011, are in use in their classrooms this fall, and actually leave curriculum decisions up the individual school district and teachers.
