A 17-year-old driver was taken to Maine Medical Center Monday with a head injury after police say the vehicle she was driving crossed into oncoming traffic on Route 196 and hit a tractortrailer truck.

Witnesses told police the car was traveling in the opposite lane. One vehicle was able to get out of the way but the tractor-trailer couldn’t avoid the car, which struck the side of it at an angle, hitting the front axle and taking the tire off the rim.
The driver of the car, a 17- year-old from Litchfield, was conscious after the crash but not alert, Ramsay said. She was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
A female passenger in the car had a bloody face, was checked at the scene and released.
Alcohol has been ruled out as a cause of the crash, which remains under investigation. The incident will be reviewed by the district attorney’s office, Ramsay said, and charges are likely pending against the driver.
Traffic was diverted to Maynard Drive for westbound traffic and through Blueberry and Birch Ridge avenues for eastbound traffic.
