American Legion Meeting
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Windham Veterans Center. A 5 p.m. social hour with refreshments will be followed at 6 p.m. with a business meeting to discuss the annual pig roast, flag removal and budget items.
Audition Notice
Windham Center Stage Theater will hold auditions for Children of Eden on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. Auditions will be held at the town hall. Food Pantry Hours
Windham Food Pantry will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day. Senior pick-up will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Call 892-1906 if you have any questions. The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday, except for holidays and is available to residents in need. The Clothes Closet is open Monday and Tuesday mornings; clothing is free.
Medicare Information
On Tuesdays, Sept. 3 and 17, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling session for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m.-noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions – and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Call SMAA to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Pig Roast
American Legion Post 148 will hold their fourth annual Pig Roast on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Windham Veterans Center. Horseshoes and other events are being planned for the afternoon prior to the dinner, which will be from 5-6:30 p.m. The event is open to the public at $10 per person or $30 for a family of four or more. This is a great opportunity for veterans to see the center and enjoy a day of camaraderie. The Vets Center is located on Military Drive, off Route 302 near Friendly’s; follow the dirt road until you see the Veterans building.
Windham Auto Show
On Sunday, Sept. 15, Windham/Raymond Athletic Boosters will hold the Windham Auto Show at Windham Mall (behind Hannaford) in North Windham, Route 302. Show cars entry, 7 a.m.-11 a.m.; judging, 11 a.m.; spectators from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission, show cars $5 donation; adults $5, seniors/students $3; children 5 and under, free. This will take place rain or shine.
Congratulations
Eliza Adams, Windham Middle School health teacher, has been named a Healthy Schools Program Ambassador by The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a national nonprofit agency working to end childhood obesity. Adams was instrumental in developing a comprehensive health education program, and in her 10th year as a health teacher, Windham Middle School earned the 2011 Blue Apple Award with distinction, presented by the National Health Education Association. Adams is a former school counselor.
Manchester School reunion
Windham’s Manchester school is 40 years old and a reunion is being planned by Bill Diamond, the first principal of the school, and a group of teachers. Bill tells us the school was originally called Windham Elementary School and was one of the first open-concept schools in the state. If there are any teachers and staff who were there in September 1973 at the beginning, contact Bill at 892-8941 or by email, [email protected]. The reunion group will meet at the school at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, for a tour of the school and lunch.
Marriage Intentions
The following have filed marriage intentions with the Windham Town Clerk’s office: Danielle Risteen and Andrew Wargo, both from Windham; Erin Gervais and Robert Bridge, both from Windham and Adrea Jaehnig and Heidi Parker, both from Windham.
Cemetery Association elects
Smith Cemetery Association held its annual meeting recently and elected the following officers for the next year: Robert Hawkes, president; George Hall, vice president; Betty Roberts, treasurer and Kathleen Soldier, secretary. Anyone who has relatives buried at this cemetery or interest in joining the society may contact one of the officers or write to PO Box 1575, Windham, ME 04062. The association provides oversight and helps care for the cemetery grounds and is the last remaining cemetery association in the town.
Art Display
Artwork by John R. Sell, a resident of Gray, is on exhibit at the Windham Public Library now through October. The pieces on display depict Maine’s spectacular coast rendered in oil on canvas. Sell is a Fellow Artist of ASAA and a member of many artist organizations and his work is displayed at various museums. Stop by the library for a look at these colorful, scenic paintings. Help for Vets
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay is available at the Windham Veterans Center, as she is on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month, from 9 a.m. until noon. She assists veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed. The Veterans Center is in North Windham, off Route 302, in back of the Windham Mall. Watch for the signs.
Lobster Dinner
On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Knights of Columbus Council 10020 will hold a lobster dinner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Roosevelt Trail, from 5-6 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and include a lobster, corn on the cob, salads, rolls, beverage and desserts. Option: Two hamburgers or cheeseburgers instead of lobster, $9 per person. Get $3 cash back at the door if you bring something for the food pantry. Tickets sold in advance after the 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday masses at our Lady of Perpetual Help Church or by calling 232-6473.

Every Tuesday through Oct. 29, the Standish Memorial Post 128 American Legion holds Bingo at the Windham Veterans Center. Doors open at 4 p.m., bingo at 6:30 p.m., refreshments available. WTA pull tabs. For more information, call 642-5583.
Jonathan Edwards Benefit Concert
On Friday, Oct. 11, Music with a Mission will present a Jonathan Edwards concert at 7 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
