FAIRFIELD (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union is asking Fairfield officials to back off a town policy that restricts what municipal employees can post on personal social media sites.

The ACLU of Maine Foundation sent Fairfield a fourpage letter Tuesday, in which the civil liberties group claims the town’s rules violate the First Amendment rights of its workers.

The rules that forbid town employees from posting obscene or sexually explicit language or images, or anything that negatively affects the public perception of the town were instituted in July after some residents expressed concern about town employee Facebook postings. Two workers were fired.

Fairfield has about 40 fulltime employees and 30 parttime and seasonal workers.
