BATH — Herschel Isaac Libby, 91, passed away on September 12, 2013.

Herschel was born on September 26, 1921, in Cumberland Center (Greely), ME, to Harry L. Sr. and Grace Libby. He moved around quite a bit as a young child, moving to Dixfield, ME in 1930, and to Bath, ME in 1936. He graduated from Morse High School in 1939, and married Leona Henderson on February 18, 1942.

Shortly after Herschel married Leona, he was drafted into the Army. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (now known as the Air Force) from 1942-1946, and attended Radio School at Scott Field, IL in 1943. He was a Control Tower Operator in Texas and New Mexico. In 1945, Herschel was stationed in Europe for 9 months as a Flying Sergeant Radio Operator on a B-17 flying fortress with the 19 Photo and Recon Squadron; mapping the Mediterranean Sea, the Isle of Crete, and the Greek Islands.

Herschel finished serving his country in March 1946, and upon returning to Bath, ME, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a mail carrier for the USPS in Bath for 43 years, retiring in 1985.

He had many hobbies including golf, bowling, reading and writing poetry, singing, and dancing. He played the saxophone and piano and played with the Bath Municipal Band for several years. He also sang in a local barber shop quartet. Herschel loved history, geography, and traveling.

Herschel also loved to help the community in any way he could and volunteered at church. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Herschel is survived by his wife of 71 years, Leona of Bath, son Dana S. Libby of Bath, two daughters, Laura L. Jones of Georgetown and Carole L. Tetrault and her husband Kenneth of Abbot, and a sister-in-law, Dottie Libby of Bath. Herschel is also survived by four loving granddaughters Jennifer Jones of Boston, MA, Stacy Jones of Poughkeepsie, NY, Anna Libby of Florida, and Angela McAllister of Monmouth, two great-granddaughters Rebecca and Shawna, three greatgreat grandchildren, and many precious nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers Harry L. Libby Jr. and Hilton F. Libby, a sister Priscilla Paisley, and a son Donald H. Libby.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 5th at 3 p.m. at the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church. Herschel will be laid to rest at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, ME.
