BELFAST (AP) — A Rhode Island man has been charged with manslaughter for a car accident in Maine that killed a passenger.

The Waldo County Sheriff ’s Department says Alvaro Soares, 27, turned himself into authorities Wednesday on manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence and other charges. He was later released on $50,000 bail.

Police say Soares was driving from a family gathering with two passengers on the Fourth of July when his vehicle crashed into a utility pole in Thorndike.
