AUGUSTA (AP) — A group of outdoors organizations have formed a coalition to oppose a proposed referendum that would ban bear hunting in Maine using bait, dogs or traps.
The Maine Wildlife Conservation Council is made up of organizations that include the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, the Maine Professional Guides Association and the Maine Trappers Association.
The coalition is holding a news conference today that will be attended by Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock.
Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting announced this summer that it plans to gather signatures of Maine voters to qualify for the November 2014 ballot. Mainers rejected a similar referendum in 2004.
Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting includes the Humane Society of the United States and the Wildlife Alliance of Maine.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
