In October, People Plus is excited to launch a new series called “FYI!” or “For Your Information!” This fun series will tantalize the mind with interesting and stimulating talks, discussions, presentations and much more in a casual setting with snacks and good friends.

FYI! Kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 8, with Barry Logan, Bowdoin College professor of biology specializing in botany. Answering the age old question — “Why do leaves change color?” — Professor Logan will both entertain and educate with his interesting presentation and engaging question/answer session. Following will be a walk around the yard to see some leaves in action.

This first-ever FYI! will be served up with hot cider and molasses cookies to set the mood for unlocking the fall mystery on why leaves change. Free to all members and the public is welcome. Please register at 729-0757 so we bake enough cookies.

Harvest time, sort of

Apple harvest time is here — Apple computers that is. Just in time for fall, People Plus, Mid Coast Hospital and Curtis Memorial Library will be collaborating on tech programs for Apple device users.

First, People Plus will present “Apps for your Health,” on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and 15, from 3:30-5 p.m. with Mid Coast Hospital, for members and non-members. Bring your device to the Center and learn about free or low-cost apps to track and manage your health with Colleen Fuller from Access Health.

Second, People Plus members can join Betty Mercier for a four week class beginning Friday, Oct. 4, on the basics of iPhone and iPad. Topics will include an introduction to the devices; pictures, Internet and social media; reading, shopping and music, writing, weather, maps and Facetime.

This class is open to members only and is $40 for four weeks.

Third in the series, Curtis Memorial Library will present Appy Hours, starting mid-October, on Thursday evenings at 5 p.m. in the seminar room. (Nov. 7, 14 and 21). Each session will cover a wide variety of apps for all seasons that run on Apple mobile devices.

All of these sessions are free and open to the public. Check the website (www.curtislibrary.com) or the library’s Facebook page in October for details.
