WINDSOR (AP) — Authorities say the victim of a fiery crash in Windsor is so badly burned they’re having trouble confirming his identity.

Kennebec County Sheriff Randall Liberty said the SUV crashed at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of routes 17 and 32, leaving the road, striking a utility pole and ending up in a ditch.

Investigators could not even confirm if the victim was a man or a woman at first. But after confirming that the driver was male, dental records are being used to make a positive identification. The fire even made it difficult to discern the SUV’s vehicle identification number and license plate.

The crash remains under investigation.
