Army Capt. Keith W. Goffin has been decorated with the Purple Heart Medal as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. He is the son Floyd B. Goffin of Brunswick. He is a 1983 graduate of University High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1988 from East Tennessee State University, both of Johnson City, Tenn. The Purple Heart is awarded to individuals wounded in war or armed conflict while engaged with an enemy or opposing armed force in defense of the U.S.
Navy Midshipman Paul M. Whalen recently completed “Plebe” Summer at the U.S. Navy Academy. Whalen, the son of Sharon S. Dohner of Woolwich and John F. Whalen of Limerick, is a 2013 graduate of Morse High School of Bath. The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer, seven challenging weeks of basic midshipman training, is carefully designed to help “plebes” prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenges leading to graduation and commissioning as a Navy or Marine Corps Officer. Plebe Summer is run by upper-class midshipmen who are specially trained in their leadership roles to effectively develop plebes into successful midshipmen.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
