Several police dogs in Maine are getting bulletproof vests.

Police in Auburn say a departmental dog named K-9 Dutch will be receiving a vest that protects against bullets and knife stabs.

The state Department of Corrections is also getting vests for two of its K-9s, Rex and Gunner.

Officials say the vests are made possible through a grant awarded to Vested Interest in K-9s Inc. by the Petco Foundation.

School board approves recruiting trip for students from China

Brunswick is the latest Maine town that’s looking at China for new students and new revenue.

The Brunswick School Board last week approved a proposal to send the assistant superintendent on a recruiting and goodwill trip to China’s Zheijang province in early November.

The trip will cost about $5,000 but will pay for itself many times over if even one exchange student agrees to spend a year at Brunswick High School, where the base annual tuition will be about $30,000, the Times Record reported.

A number of Maine schools in recent years have looked to China and elsewhere overseas to recruit students as Maine’s school-age population continues to fall.

Other towns that have recruited Chinese students for their high school include Falmouth, Millinocket, Orono, Kennebunk and Wiscasset. Private schools including Lee Academy and Bridgton Academy have done the same.

Assistant Superintendent Greg Bartlett will be traveling with eight to 10 representatives from other New England schools, some of them private institutions in affluent communities.

“But we can compete,” he said. “We’re right there with them in extracurricular, athletics and academics.”
