SCARBOROUGH — The wind was blustery, the rain at times driving on Monday, but that didn’t stop the Wells golf team from qualifying for the Class B state championships.

The Warriors shot 359, finishing in third place. The top four teams made it to Saturday’s state championship, which will be played at Natanis in Vassalboro.

Wells’ Nick Audet led the squad with a 77, followed by Connor Pease’s 92, Shawn Ramsey’s 93, Seamus McDonough’s 97, Mikey Stivaletta’s 102 and Anthony Crawford’s 117.

“We played really well as a team despite some pretty tough weather conditions,” said Wells coach Jay Audet, also Nick’s father. “I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

Wells qualified for the state championship in 2011, but didn’t qualify in 2012, making Monday’s achievement a little more exciting.

“I am so happy for our team,” Nick Audet said. “That was not an easy day today, but we played through it, and I am looking forward to Saturday.”

Twice during the 18 holes, rain became heavy, causing clubs to become slippery for the golfers, but that didn’t stop Nick Audet from finishing second place overall with his 77. That score qualified him for the individual state championship, which will be played at Natanis on Oct. 19, a week after the team state championship.

Audet pared eight holes, and shot an eagle on the par-4, 14th hole despite heavy wind.

“My club became a bit slippery, but I just focused,” he said. “I think scores were up all around today, but this just gets you ready to play in nicer weather, hopefully.”

Cape Elizabeth qualified in first place with a team medal of 325. Cape’s No. 1 golfer Reese McFarlane placed first on the day, shooting a 75. He pared nine holes and birdied one.

A week earlier, Wells’ Nikki Moody shot a 99 in the girls WMC qualifier. She will be playing in the girls state championship on Oct. 19.

“It should be a fun couple of weeks,” Jay Audet said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
