HARPSWELL

Selectmen at their next meeting will detail the town’s potential purchase of land owned by Dain Allen, a fisherman and the owner of Allen’s Seafood down on Lookout Point.

Allen, 77, has offered to sell the town a small piece of property adjacent to the town landing at Lookout Point to protect it for public use — primarily clamming and small boating and paddling.

Allen had granted community use of the parcel for many years, and wants to make sure that continues.

He had received another offer for more than his asking price of $85,000 — but held off because of the town’s interest in the parcel, and because, in his words, “it seems like the right thing to do.”

Residents will be asked to vote on whether the town should purchase the land to keep it open as working waterfront on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The information about the potential purchase will occur toward the end of the selectmen’s meeting Wednesday.

Town officials believe the public hearing on the purchase won’t begin until about 7:30, even though the meeting proper begins at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, Mountain Road.
