BRUNSWICK — Virginia Eve Putnam, 44, of Brunswick, died Sept. 26 surrounded by her family, after a long battle with breast cancer.

She grew up in Scituate, Mass., and attended Scituate Public Schools. She graduated in 1988 from Monmouth Academy, and was a 1993 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono.

Putnam was a registered nurse and prior to her illness worked in labor and delivery as well as neonatal intensive care. She also was a birthing coach. It gave her great joy to help bring new life into the world.

She was an active parent in Brunswick’s youth athletic organizations and frequently attended her son’s sporting events. For many summers, she worked at Camp Laurel South in Casco. Most recently, she worked with her partner, Bob, to realize their lifelong dream of establishing a summer camp, the New England Golf Camp at Sunday River.

First diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 14, she inspired others with her spirit of life, courage and determination in her 30-year fight against cancer.

Putnam is survived by her son, Bradford Leaman, of Brunswick; devoted life partner, Bob Siff, of Brunswick; father, John L. Putnam and wife Ann Crowley, of Pembroke; mother, Sandra Putnam-Franklin, of Marshfield, Mass.; brothers, Jeffrey L. Putnam and wife Tina, of Pembroke, and Daniel J. Putnam; of Humarock, Mass.; nieces, Taylor Marie and Courtney Ann Ginger Putnam, of Pembroke; and a step-brother, many step-sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends and family may visit at noon, Saturday, Oct. 19, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Putnam’s name to the Jimmy Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
