The Belfast Poetry Festival will kick off Friday with performances of poetry from slam and spoken- word poets from Portland’s Poet Rising collective.
The two-day festival, held at the Hutchinson Center, the Belfast Free Library and throughout downtown Belfast, will feature a multimedia show, gallery hunt, performance poetry and workshops in poetry writing and performance.

The poetry performance night will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library. The Poet Rising collective will offer group and solo performances.
The event will also feature Marilyn Hotch of Camden, winner of this year’s Maine Postmark Poetry Contest, who will present her winning poem, “Mother.” There will also be readings from the second- and third-place finalists, Darla Himeles of Castine and Kathryn Robyn of Belfast. An open reading will follow. All entries from the Maine Postmark Poetry Contest will be displayed in downtown art galleries.
The festival’s feature event, the “Poem to Behold” multimedia show, will feature artistic collaborations between more than a dozen poets and visual artists from across the state.
Several workshops in poetry writing and poetry performance will be offered Saturday at the Belfast Free Library. Space is limited. To register, send $25 payable to City of Belfast to Jacob Fricke, Belfast Poetry Festival, P.O. Box 911, Belfast, ME 04915.
