BRUNSWICK — Jake Dexter’s 2-yard touchdown run in overtime gave upsetminded Messalonskee a 21- 14 Eastern Maine Class B win over previously-unbeaten Brunswick on Friday.
The 3-3 Eagles led from the start, getting a Dylan Bragg TD run in the first quarter to give Messalonskee a 7-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, Dragons (5-1) quarterback Brady Larson scored on a 2-yard run, with Adam Casey’s extra-point kick tying the game, 7-7.
But, the Eagles came right back, taking a 14-7 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 55- yard run by Corey McKenzie.
Brunswick tied the game a second time with two minutes remaining in regulation as Lucas McCue caught a pass from Larson for a 70- yard gain before scoring on a 5-yard run to knot the game, 14-14.
However, Messalonskee scored on its possession in overtime, and the Eagles held on downs to come away with the victory.
“We just didn’t play well,” said Brunswick coach Dan Cooper, whose Dragons visit rival Lawrence this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m. “We need to find a way to play better. Messalonskee made the plays and we didn’t. They didn’t turn the ball over and gambled on several fourth downs and made them. They played like they had nothing to lose.”
Evan Groat led the Dragons on the ground with 60 yards, with Ryan Maciejewski chipping in 50. Larson threw for 90 yards, with the Eagles defense picking up two interceptions.
On defense, Jacob Duffy and Josh Thibeault led Brunswick with several tackles each.
