Claire, housewife/grandmother/greatgrandmother, and John, house husband, are both retired.
An anniversary celebration took place on Oct. 6, 2013, at a dinner party at the Brunswick Inn on Park Row.
The couple, high school sweethearts, were married in 1943 during the Second World War in Goldsboro, N.C. They lived in Fort Myers, Fla., until the war ended in 1945.
After the war they moved to Hartford, Conn., and then eventually moved to Bloomfield, Conn. They lived there for 37 years, summering in Old Lyme, Conn., before moving to Maine to be closer to their daughters.
They are the parents of Deborah Quinlan of Orr’s Island and Sandra Potholm of Harpswell. They have two grandchildren, Erik Potholm of Alexandria, Va., and Heather Davis of Harpswell. John and Claire are also the great-grandparents of Noah and Aiden Potholm and William Davis.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
