UNITY TOWNSHIP — The fatal accident Monday afternoon on Route 139 occurred after a dog in a pickup truck apparently jumped into the driver’s lap, jerking the steering wheel and sending the truck crashing head-on into the car driven by the woman who was killed, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Donna Jackson, 59, of Waterville and Knox, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Ryan Reardon, chief deputy.

Jackson was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier east on Route 139, also called Waterville Road, Reardon said.

He said the 1995 Ford pickup truck, being driven west by Tyler Brackett, 29, of Unity, crossed the centerline.

“It appears that the dog was not secure in the vehicle and, according to deputy reports, hopped into his lap, causing the steering wheel to be jarred,” Reardon said.

Brackett was in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon at Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to hospital spokeswoman said.
