HARPSWELL — Lawrence H. Catlin, age 91, of Catlin Shore Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Mid Coast Hospital. He was born in East Harpswell on Feb. 27, 1922, the son of Stephen W. Catlin Jr. and Ida Miller.

He attended Harpswell and Brunswick schools. He worked at BIW as a chipper for 47 years, retiring in 1984. While at BIW he was known as the “Big Cat.” During WWII, he served in the Navy as a Seabee. In January of 1952 he married Beatrice Goodenow, who passed away in June of 1975.

Lawrence liked to be outdoors. He cut his own trees and milled them to build his own house, and built furniture. He cut and split his own wood and enjoyed taking walks in the woods. He enjoyed gardening and helping his neighbors.

He is survived by a son, Lawrence Stephen Catlin and his wife Nancy of Wales; 2 daughters, Betty Lou Catlin of Harpswell, and Pamela Ann Sewall and her husband Ed of Brunswick; a sister, Florence Toothaker of Freeport. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by a sister, Alice Catlin, and 2 brothers, Walter and Alfred Catlin.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, Oct. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Maquoit Cemetery in Brunswick.
