Wiechman leads Sabers, NEFL title game awaits

John Wiechman scored touchdowns on runs of 22 and 12 yards as the Maine Sabers (12-0) clinched a spot in the championship game of the New England Football League with a 24-7 win over the Boston Bandits (8-4) on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Portland.

The lone Boston touchdown was on a fumble return, as the Sabers defense did not give up any points and did not allow the Bandits to advance the ball past the Sabers 35.

Maine also scored a touchdown on a 43-yard pass from Jeremy Shorey to Shane Ciriello, and Steve Goodrich kicked a 27-yard field goal.

The Sabers will host the NEFL championship game next weekend, with the field and time to be determined.

TENNIS

LUXEMBOURG OPEN: Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark will play Annika Beck of Germany in Sunday’s final at Luxembourg.

Wozniacki, ranked No. 9, defeated third-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

GOLF

PGA: Webb Simpson maintained a four-stroke lead in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, birdieing four of the last seven holes at Las Vegas.

Making his first start since helping the U.S. win the Presidents Cup, the 2012 U.S. Open champion shot a 4-under 67 to reach 19 under. He opened with rounds of 64 and 63.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bernhard Langer overcame a shaky start and soggy course conditions to take a two-stroke lead in the Greater Hickory Classic at Conover, N.C.

Michael Allen, Brad Bryant and John Riegger were tied for second.

JAPAN OPEN: Japan’s Koumei Oda opened a three-stroke lead, shooting a 4-under 67 at Ibaraki, Japan.

Japan’s Masanori Kobayashi was second after a 69. Australia’s Scott Strange was third at 4 under after a 67.

KOREA OPEN: South Korea’s Kim Hyung-tae shot a 5-under 66 to take a four-shot lead, while Rory McIlroy had a 75 to drop 10 strokes behind at Cheonan, South Korea.

Kim had a 9-under 204 total in the OneAsia Tour event. South Korea’s Hong Soon-sang was second after a 71.

MACAU OPEN: Australia’s Scott Hend shot an 8-under 63 to take a four-stroke lead over Ernie Els and Bangladesh’s Mohammad Siddikur at Macau.

PREP SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Aimee Briand, Siobahn McDermott and Becca Siegel each scored to lead Berwick Academy (9-4) to a 3-0 win over Portsmouth Abbey at Portsmouth, R.I.

Torieanna St. Pierre, Christina Grassie and Anna Cosentino combined on the shutout, their fifth of the season.

SOCCER

SPAIN: Barcelona drew 0-0 at Osasuna and Atletico Madrid fell 1-0 at Espanyol, leaving both teams one victory shy of matching the 45-year-old Spanish league record of nine wins to start the season

MLS: Diego Fagundez scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 76th minute to lift the host New England Revolution to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

A.J. Soares and Chris Tierney also scored for the Revs.

New England (13-11-9, 48 points) is tied for fourth in the Eastern Conference with Houston.
