Club gives $140,000 to Sarah’s House

The Old Town Rotary Club has donated $140,000 to Sarah’s House of Maine, a hospitality house for cancer patients at Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Cancer Care of Maine facility.

Sarah’s House is the dream of the late Sarah Robinson, an Old Town Rotarian who was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and had to travel from Old Town to Boston for treatment. Robinson died in December 2011.

Knowing first-hand of the physical, emotional and financial challenges experienced by those undergoing cancer treatment and the long distances they sometimes have to travel to receive it, Robinson envisioned and worked diligently to realize a cancer hospitality house for residents of eastern, central and northern Maine.

The Sarah’s House of Maine organization was formed to raise funds for the project.

Sarah’s House will be located in the former Fox Run Furniture building on Main Road in Holden, a short drive from the Lafayette Family Cancer Center. It will provide cancer patients who have to travel long distances with a place they can stay at little or no cost while receiving treatment.

The first phase of the project requires $893,000 to cover necessary renovations to the Holden location and the first five years of operations. Long-term sustainability, at little to no cost to the guests who stay there, will require an endowment of $3 million in order to provide maintenance and staffing for the facility.

A campaign is now underway to meet both short- and long-term goals.

Money raised for heating-aid fund

Tedford Housing raised more than $600 at its kickoff fundraising event at Brunswick’s Gelato Fiasco recently.

Those funds will be donated to Tedford’s “Warm Thy Neighbor” Heating Assistance Fund to buy fuel for neighbors in need.

Last year, the program provided oil to warm more than 165 households in Brunswick, Topsham and neighboring communities.

Many of those needing assistance are families with children and elderly people living on fixed income.

Tedford Housing is accepting donations to the heating assistance fund.

Checks may be made payable to “Warm Thy Neighbor” c/o Tedford Housing, PO Box 958, Brunswick ME 04011.

Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Key Clubbers off to busy, helping start

Sanford High School Key Clubbers had a very active start to their new school year.

Recently, 15 members collected trash around the school grounds and the stadium, just in time for Homecoming, while another group of members volunteered to help facilitate the recent Annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

Clubbers helped set up for the event; they helped provide safety for walkers at crosswalks; and they helped plant “flowers” in the “flower” garden.

The Sanford walkers raised more than $33,000.

Following the walk, eight clubbers helped collect food at the Sanford Walmart for Sanford’s Backpack Program to send backpacks filled with food home on weekends to help families who need a little extra help. The following day they helped ready the food for distribution.

Key Club is a student-led community service organization that began over 80 years ago to help teens reach out to their communities and get involved with their school and towns.

There are more than 200,000 members of Key Club International in more than 30 countries around the world.

KENNEBUNK

Golf event raises $30,000

A recently held Webhannet Charity Golf Tournament has raised some $30,000 to benefit local charities.

Half of the funds will be dispersed to three local charities: Toys for Tots Saco, Community Bike Center of Biddeford and “Kids Free to Grow”-Child Abuse Center of York County.

The remaining $15,000 will be used by the Webhannet Charitable Foundation for future donations to deserving charities in southern Maine.
