PORTLAND (AP) — A new lobbying organization for owners of franchise businesses in Maine has formed in Portland.
The Maine Franchise Owners Association aims to work with the Democraticcontrolled Legislature to make it easier to do business in the state.
The organization’s executive director, Jim Coen, tells the Portland Press Herald that businesses are frustrated with the laws on the books in Maine that are hindering business operation and growth.
More than 38,000 Mainers are employed by about 3,500 franchise businesses, like yogurt chains, pizza restaurants and coffee shops, in the state.
Franchise owners are paying fees to fund the organization.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
