Murphy finally caught up with Guadalupi midway through Saturday’s Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship meet at Cony High School.
And, when it was all said and done, Murphy laid claim to the Class A title with a time of 20:40, three seconds faster than the Cony freshman. Brunswick teammate Tessa Cassidy took third in 21:12.
Hampden’s Elizabeth Labun took fourth (21:13) and sparked the Broncos to the team title, 52-65, over the Dragons.
Lewiston (97) was third, Mt. Ararat fourth (111) and Mt. Blue fifth (111).
Kelly Lynch of Mt. Ararat was sixth overall in 21:42, while teammates Emmie Cox (23:25.4) and Amy Segars (23:25.8) were 22nd and 23rd, respectively.“We talked about Guadalupi and their coach said she likes to go out fast. But, I know Teresa really wanted to win that race,” said Brunswick coach Dave DeLois, “We knew Guadalupi was a pretty good runner and that’s what she usually does, Maybe she went out a little too fast.
“I had Hampden in the mix,” added DeLois. “I just think they had it that day and we didn’t. But, we’ll see next week (Eastern Regional), with the same teams and same runners.”
In the Class A boys meet, Josh Horne of Mt. Blue (17:05) won over Hampden’s Caleb Lord (17:07.1) and teammates Aaron Willingham (17:07.8) and Dan Lesko (17:18), while Bangor toppled highly regarded and injury laden Lewiston, 72-86. Mt. Blue was third (95), followed by Brewer (98) and Hampden (109) with Mt. Ararat seventh (139) and Brunswick eighth (172).
Top Mt. Ararat runners were Nathan MacKenzie (12th, 18:08), Sam Wood (14, 18:18) and Matt Gott (26, 19:04), while top three Brunswick runners were Christopher Tanner (22, 18:57), Jason Higginbotham (28, 19:04) and John Murphy (32, 19:17).
In Class B girls, Abby Hersom of Oceanside won in 20:49, while Maranacook took the team title, 61-91, over Camden Hills. Morse was sixth (154) and led by Amy Franklin (9th, 22:25), Kelsea Albertson (12, 22:59) and Maris Adler (24:10).
In the Class B boys meet, Ben Trapani of Camden Hills won in 17:17, while Maranacook won, 57-81, over Lincoln Academy with Morse sixth (151).
Top three Shipbuilders were Christopher Walfield (6th, 18:28), Noah Lapointe (28, 19:51) and Aidan McGowan (42, 20:54).
