AUGUSTA (AP) — The top Republican in Maine’s House of Representatives says he’s concerned Democrats are going to unfairly spike his proposal to change the state’s welfare requirements.

The measure would require some welfare recipients to prove they’ve applied to at least three jobs before getting benefits.

House GOP Leader Ken Fredette said in a statement Monday that he expects Democrats to use a rule prohibiting the introduction of duplicated measures in order to kill it.

Democrats say it’s similar to one introduced and rejected last session, but Fredette says his is different.

A legislative panel will meet Wednesday to decide which bills should be considered next session.
