BRUNSWICK — Winifred Pulkkinen, 93, of Guilford and Brunswick, passed away at the Freeport Nursing Home on Oct. 21, 2013. Winnie was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Greenville, Maine to Lelia (Forbus) and Francis Dudley Jr.

She lived in Guilford most of her life, graduating from high school in 1939, working as a secretary in Guilford and a nanny in NY before marrying Herbert Pulkkinen in 1942. Together they created a home in Guilford and raised six children. Winnie was an active member of her community, a Sunday school teacher, band booster president, a member of the Zephyrus Club, active Democrat, U.S. postal clerk for many years, and a tireless supporter of her children’s varied activities.

She loved to talk, laugh, and create fun, making her a favorite in her neighborhood and community. She loved children, who instantly knew her heart. Many have called her a second Mom, Aunt Winnie, or Grammie.

She is survived by daughters Andrea and Susan of Brunswick, Jean Hunt and her husband James of Brunswick; sons Craig and his wife Joanie of Jonesport, and Lance and his wife Kathy of Abbot. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.

Winnie treasured many friends, some for over seventy years, and countless others whose lives she touched with her generosity, kindness, and great humor. Winnie was predeceased by three sisters, her husband, and daughter Joan. Winnie was full of life, energy, courage, and determination. In addition to all of the people she loved, Winnie filled her life with cooking, flowers, birds, books and basketball.

Please join her family in celebrating her life at the Guilford United Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, plant flowers in her memory or give a child a book.
