A fire in the Hyde Park neighborhood overnight gutted a residence at 10 Bluff Road. No one was injured.

Bath Fire Chief Lawrence Renaud said the interior was a total loss, and the roof was significantly damaged during the course of fighting the fire.

Renaud said the fire department had not yet met with the property owner, so no damage estimate was available.

No cause has yet been determined. The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Bath Fire Department are scheduled to go through the remains of the building this morning, and Renaud said a preliminary cause of the fire might be available by midday.

Fighting the fire was hampered by overhead electric lines near the roofline, and power to the building was not shut off while the incident was ongoing.

The property is across the street from the site of a gas explosion that claimed the life of a woman in February. The state is still investigating that blaze.

Propane was not a factor in this fire, but clearly that incident was on the minds of neighbors who gathered outside in the early morning hours.

A cat was missing in the fire has not been located.

Units from Bath and West Bath responded. The resident, Elizabeth Staples, was offered temporary assistance from the Red Cross.
