PORTLAND BOXING CLUB: Pro welterweight Jimmy Smith of Biddeford was added to the fight card for the event at the Portland Expo on Nov. 16.

Smith, who was a three-time New England Champion as an amateur and was named the Outstanding Boxer in the 2009 New England Golden Gloves, will be making his second fight as a pro.

ROAD RACING

MARATHON: Joan Benoit Samuelson ran Sunday’s New York City Marathon in a time of 2:57.13. At 56, she did not enter the women’s elite field, but her time would have placed her 41st.

Del Potro beats Gasquet in first round of ATP Finals

Former finalist Juan Martin del Potro battled his way past Richard Gasquet 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5 to win his opening round-robin match in the ATP World Tour Finals at London.

Del Potro extended his record against Gasquet to 6-1 and secured a crucial win in a tough Group B that also includes Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

• Stanislas Wawrinka marked his first appearance at the season-ending finals with a 6-3, 6-7 (0), 6-3 win over Tomas Berdych.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: A former Miami defensive lineman who tweeted that he would pay $1,000 to any Hurricane who “takes … out” a Florida State player has lost his job as a sports radio host.

Dan Sileo was fired Monday by WMEN, one day after posting the now-deleted tweet. Sileo says he only intended the tweet as a joke.

Sileo played for the Hurricanes in the mid-1980s and appeared in 10 NFL games with Tampa Bay in 1987.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: A day after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was briefly knocked unconscious but continued to play, Tottenham defended its decision despite criticism from FIFA and the soccer players’ union.

Lloris was knocked out Sunday when his head smashed into a knee of Everton forward Romelu Lukaku. The goalkeeper was treated on the field but was allowed to keep playing despite medical advice against it. Lloris could not remember the incident.

On Monday, Tottenham said that brain scans gave Lloris an all-clear. However, as critics point out, the extent of the injury would not have been known during the match.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Next year’s championship will likely have a more level playing field as teams and drivers adapt to new, less powerful engines, and impending regulation changes that will challenge Red Bull’s superiority.

In the meanwhile, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel continues to dominate the field – he won Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with ease, and can set a season record with an eighth straight win at the United States GP.

If he wins the season-ending Brazilian GP, he would equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in a season.

The next mark for Vettel, 26, to chase would be the career record of nine consecutive wins, achieved by Italian driver Alberto Ascari over the 1952-53 seasons.

CYCLING

USA PRO CHALLENGE: Next year’s Aug. 18-24 race will feature its first mountaintop finish with a stage ending atop Monarch Mountain in Denver.

With a base elevation of 10,790 feet, it will be the highest stage in North America.
