NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — Tori Dolce put back the rebound of a Hunter Carden shot after 5:13 and fourth-ranked UMass-Dartmouth went on to a 2-0 victory against fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference field hockey quarterfinal Tuesday.

Devon Herlihy added a goal less than eight minutes later off a penalty corner for the Corsairs (14-6). Eleanor Taylor and Emily Anderson assisted on the second goal.

Lauren O’Brien needed to make only one save to shut out the Huskies (10-11). Amanda Kasbohm had 12 saves for USM.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UMASS-DARTMOUTH 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Kathleen Landers scored the winning goal in the 59th minute as the third-seeded Corsairs (12-7-1) downed the sixth-seeded Huskies (5-14-1) in a Little East Conference first-round game at North Dartmouth, Mass.

Landers got to Lucy Jensen’s cross from the end line and beat goalkeeper Katie Cobb to snap a 1-1 tie.

The win sent the Corsairs into a Thursday semifinal at second-seeded Keene State.

The Corsairs opened a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Jensen flicked in a cross delivered into the box by Jillian Van Ness. Nicole Bordeau tied it in the 56th minute on a free kick from the left, outside the 18-yard box.

Michelle Miller recorded six saves for UMass-Dartmouth. Cobb stopped nine shots.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

SOUTHERN MAINE 1, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Erin Banfield’s goal 4:21 into the third period lifted the Huskies (1-0) over the Nor’easters (1-1-1)at Biddeford.

Liz Bergstrom had 20 saves for the Huskies, including a save on Marissa Biederman’s power-play shot with 10 seconds left. Sydney Helmbrecht stopped 27 shots for UNE.

FOOTBALL

NORTH CAROLINA: Quarterback Bryn Renner needs season-ending shoulder surgery.

 

WEST VIRGINIA: Receiver Ronald Carswell was suspended for the rest of the season. The school gave no explanation.

BASEBALL

A BALL SHOWN to fly farther will be used during the NCAA tournament starting in 2015 in an attempt to increase offense.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

OREGON: Guard Dominic Artis and forward Ben Carter were suspended indefinitely for violating NCAA rules against selling team-issued apparel.
