PORTLAND — Two dozen Maine residents are going to undergo “bio-monitoring” tests for the presence of certain chemicals in their system.
The Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine advocacy group is commissioning the tests over the next two months that will detect phthalates (THAL-ates) in someone’s system.
The test’s first two participants will announce their decision on Thursday in Portland.
The Centers for Disease Control says phthalates are commonly used to make plastics more flexible and can be found in hundreds of products, including detergents and nail polish.
The Alliance for a Clean and Healthy Maine says the chemicals can impact brain development and lead to issues like attention and learning problems and asthma.
The CDC says the health effects from small exposure to the chemicals are not known.
