Cape Elizabeth police arrested two York men on charges of breaking into Portland Head Light and stealing a lithograph from the lighthouse museum early Thursday morning.

Police charged Adam Ruger, 20, of York, with refusing to submit to arrest, aggravated criminal mischief, burglary, theft, possession of burglar tools and failure to give correct name and failure to notify police about an accident.

Police also charged Zachary Faskianos, 18, of York, with theft, drunken driving and refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, aggravated criminal mischief and burglary.

Both men have been released on bail pending a future court date.

Police were called to the lighthouse at Fort Williams Park at 1 a.m. and found someone had smashed a window into the museum, which is part of the keeper’s quarters of the lighthouse.

Officers used a police dog, which tracked to an area where a car had been parked on a nearby road. Meanwhile, police received a report of a car crash at Stony Brook and Shore roads. There, officers found a 2004 Toyota Tacoma that had damaged about 16 feet of stone wall. It’s not clear who owns the stone wall.

Portland Head Light, considered one of the most photographed lighthouses in America, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

It is owned and managed by the town of Cape Elizabeth.

Established in 1791, it is Maine’s oldest lighthouse. According to the town’s website, more than a million people visit the park each year.
