AUGUSTA — Maine’s largest utility is renewing its warning to customers to be aware of a scam to fraudulently collect money from customers.
Central Maine Power Co. says it’s received reports of people claiming to represent CMP calling customers and demanding immediate payments. Some customers have been told to deposit cash or a money order into bogus accounts through convenience store cash transfer systems, while others have been instructed to call a number and provide personal financial information to settle a bill.
CMP says most of the calls have targeted the owners of small businesses and restaurants in the Lewiston-Auburn, Portland and Augusta areas. Some residential customers have also reported getting calls.
