FREEPORT — The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to reappoint Councilor James Hendricks as chairman and Councilor Kristina Egan as vice chairwoman for the next year.

“It’s always nice to be unanimously elected, but I think it’s a situation where we were moving very well last year and decided to keep the same leadership for this year,” said Hendricks, a councilor-at-large, who was first elected in 2010 and ran unopposed for a second term this month.

“I think we have a terrific council,” said Egan, who represents District 3 and is entering the third and final year of her first term. “We have many different points of view, but we all get along very well, so I think, moving forward, under Jimmy’s leadership and with my help, we’re going to have a great year this next year.”

The councilors were hesitant on Tuesday to discuss goals for the coming year, saying they would formally issue them in January. But, Egan said, “One goal we have every year is to ensure that we get the most out of property taxes without increasing them, so we’ve been looking to try to keep that stability over time, and I expect that will be one of our primary goals going forward.”

In other business, Town Clerk Tracey Stevens on Tuesday reported on the Nov. 5 election. She said 42 percent of registered voters cast ballots and that Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap visited the polls at Freeport High School and praised the efficiency of the operation.

During the meeting’s public comment period, Freeport resident Sally Walsh presented a letter suggesting the creation of a task force to help make the town more navigable for people with limited mobility.

She said she came up with the idea after she broke her leg last year and found it very difficult to get around town. Walsh previously sent the letter to the Planning Board, but received no response, she said.

The meeting, which could have been the council’s shortest, lasted about 15 minutes.
