DURHAM, N.C. — Rodney Hood’s free throw with 5 seconds left helped No. 6 Duke dodge Vermont’s upset bid and gave the Blue Devils a 91-90 victory on Sunday night.
Jabari Parker scored 24 points and Hood finished with 22 for the Blue Devils (5-1), who extended their nonconference winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium to 106 games – barely.
Duke blew a 15-point lead and allowed Vermont (1-5) to shoot 65 percent before finally getting the one defensive stop it needed.
Candon Rusin’s four-point play with 10.4 seconds left for Vermont tied it at 90. Hood brought the ball downcourt, drove the lane and drew contact from Clancy Rugg. Hood bounced his first free throw off the rim, then swished the second.
The Catamounts couldn’t get off a shot at the buzzer.
(24) NORTH CAROLINA 93, (3) LOUISVILLE 84: Marcus Paige scored 32 points and North Carolina (4-1) upset Louisville (5-1) to win the Hall of Fame Tipoff Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.
GEORGETOWN 84 (10) VCU 80: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 26 points and Georgetown (3-2) fought off Virginia Commonwealth (4-2) late to hang on for victory in the fifth-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
(19) NEW MEXICO 79, DAVIDSON 58: Alex Kirk had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and New Mexico (4-1) took third place at the Charleston, S.C., Classic.
COLBY 87, FISHER 71: Chris Hudnut scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half as the Mules (4-1) built a 10-point halftime lead and went on to defeat the Falcons (4-5) in the championship game of the Colby Classic at Waterville.
Fisher cut the deficit to 51-46 early in the second half, but the Mules regained control with a 7-0 run and led by as many as 22 points down the stretch.
Hudnut, the tourney MVP, also grabbed eight rebounds and had eight assists.
Luke Westman added 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Ryan Jann and Patrick Stewart scored 13 points apiece.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
SYRACUSE 97, MAINE 42: Brittney Sykes scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the host Orange (5-0) scored the first 12 points while cruising over the Black Bears (3-1).
Maine was paced by Ashleigh Roberts, who finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Liz Wood had 10 points and six rebounds.
(1) CONNECTICUT 88, ST. BONAVENTURE 39: Kiah Stokes scored a career-high 19 points, and Stefanie Dolson added 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Huskies (8-0) to a rout over the Bonnies (7-2) on the final day of the Hall of Fame Classic in Hartford, Conn.
(2) DUKE 78, MARQUETTE 61: Elizabeth Williams scored 23 points and Alexis Jones added 19 as the Blue Devils (5-0) remained undefeated with a victory in Milwaukee.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
PROVIDENCE 4, MAINE 2: Corinne Buie collected two goals and two assists for the host Friars (6-10, 3-5 Hockey East) as they scored three unanswered goals over the final two periods to rally past the Black Bears (0-11-3, 0-7-3).
Maine took the lead just 1:07 into the game when Audra Richards scored on assists from Brianne Kilgour and Brooklyn Langlois.
The Friars tied the game two minutes later before the Black Bears regained the lead on a goal by Missy Denk at 6:41.
Meghann Treacy finished with 34 saves for the Black Bears.
FOOTBALL
GEORGIA: Senior Aaron Murray, the first quarterback in Southeastern Conference history to pass for at least 3,000 years in four seasons, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Saturday’s 59-17 rout over Kentucky and will have surgery.
Hutson Mason, a junior who relieved Murray, is expected to start the rest of the way for the Bulldogs (7-4, 5-3 SEC).
BCS RANKINGS: Northern Illinois moved ahead of Fresno State and up to No. 14 as the Huskies and Bulldogs jockey to be the last BCS buster.
Northern Illinois jumped two spots, while Fresno State slipped one to 16th.
The top three teams were unchanged: Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State – the remaining undefeated teams in BCS automatic qualifying conferences.
