YARMOUTH — Yarmouth/Freeport jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead and never looked back in a 7- 2 Eastern girls ice hockey high school victory over Brunswick on Saturday in season-opening play for both teams.
Colleen Sullivan (assisted by Ariel Potter), Kelsey Meyer (Katie Clemmer) and Breanna Morrill (Potter, Sullivan) scored early for the Clippers.
Grace Rabinowitz scored for the Dragons (0-1), but Emily Johnson (Katie Brown) and Michelle Robichaud (Johnson, Brown) answered for the hosts for a 5-1 cushion through 15 minutes.
Tessa Cassidy converted a Katie Brown setup at 9:53 of the second period to bring Brunswick to within three goals.
However, Potter answered just 37 seconds later, and scored the lone third-period goal to cap the scoring.
Yarmouth/Freeport (1-0 and scheduled to host Mt. Ararat on Wednesday) outshot Brunswick 30-4. Dragons goaltender Claire Mendes made 23 saves, while Hannah Williams of Freeport had two stops for the hosts.
Brunswick is slated to host Lewiston on Friday (8:15 p.m.) and Winslow on Saturday (4:30 p.m.) at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
