WISCASSET — As a town panel nears completion of a master plan for U.S. Route 1, the public is invited to attend a workshop on the plan with Wiscasset selectmen 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Wiscasset officials say the town and Maine Department of Transportation face significant challenges in the U.S. 1/Bath Road corridor.

For many years, the town’s and the state’s plans for Route 1 assumed a village bypass would be developed. With the cancellation of bypass planning, officials say it is now time for the town and Maine DOT to reexamine the corridor with the purpose of developing a master plan that addresses DOT’s goals of maintaining Route 1’s mobility and safety and Wiscasset’s goals of increasing its commercial tax base and job opportunities while managing traffic along the highway.

Over the past year, a steering committee of Route 1 business owners, residents, elected officials, advocates for bicyclists and pedestrians, the state, town and Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission has been working to prepare a master plan for the commercial business area of Route 1 in Wiscasset.

As part of that plan, the committee reviewed existing conditions and projected future conditions of the corridor, impacts to future development and mobility, as well as potential strategies for encouraging development while preserving mobility of the corridor.
