FIRST-GRADERS from St. John’s Catholic School in Brunswick proudly delivered nearly 90 pounds of food Nov. 21 to the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. During their Nov. 21 visit, the children also learned where their donations go and how crucial their charitable giving is for many in need. Students were led on a tour of the program’s 84A Union St. facility by Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program Executive Director Karen Parker, who told them the program has more than 160 volunteers, provides food for more than 1,200 local families through a food bank, food pantry and soup kitchen; and will assist 500 families on Thanksgiving by creating baskets with all of the fixings. The students observed volunteers checking over and preparing food donations for the community. “We learned that they have a place where people can go and get a meal,” said first-grader Nathan Minzner. “It’s called a soup kitchen.” “We learned that they don’t just get healthy food,” added Sabina Moser, another member of the first-grade class. “They can get cake and desserts!”
