BOWDOINHAM — Hartley Maxwell Douglass, 84, resident of Millay Road in Bowdoinham, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at the Marshwood Center in Lewiston following a long illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1929, in Richmond, ME, a son of Milton and Ina B. (Pratt) Douglass. He was educated in Bowdoinham schools.

On June 9, 1950, Hartley married Beverly Hinkley and together raised their family.

Hartley worked for many years as a maintenance mechanic at Bath Iron Works. He was active in many organizations, including the Merrymeeting Grange, Village Lodge of Masons and the Knights of Pythias.

He was an active member of the Bowdoinham Fire Department and also served as a fireman with Maine Central Railroad. He was a longtime member of the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Hartley was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed hunting.

He was predeceased by a son Dale Douglass, who died in 2007, a brother Warren Douglass and four sisters, Helen James, Madelyn Barter, Evelyn Marriner and Shirley Curtis.

Survivors include his wife Beverly of Bowdoinham; three sons, Gary and his wife Linda of Bowdoinham, David of Brunswick and Rodney and his wife Debra of Bowdoinham; a daughter Debbie J. and her husband David Polley of Poland; nine grandchildren and seven great-grand children.

Services will be private. Interment will be in Bayview Cemetery in Bowdoinham. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home in Brunswick.
