BRUNSWICK — After 20 consecutive losses as a varsity team, it seemed like was just a matter of time until the Mt. Ararat High School girls ice hockey team picked up its first win.
The time came on Friday as the Eagles scored six first-period goals and never looked back in an 11-1 victory over Portland/ Deering at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
Mt. Ararat, 1-2 and scheduled to visit Gorham on Wednesday, outshot the visitors 19-2 in the opening frame.
Kayla Richardson led the Eagles with two goals and three assists, while Devon Hutchins recorded her first high school hat trick, pocketing three goals. Nellie Hetherington chipped in two goals, Carly Raymond two goals and one assist, Dani Krause and Natalie Burch tallied their first varsity goal each, and Kiely Hetherington picked up an assist.
In goal, Mt. Ararat’s Alison Nolan turned away eight shots as the Eagles finished with a 29-9 shots advantage.
“We talked before the game about offense, needed someone to step up and put the puck in the net,” said Mt. Ararat coach Ron Hutchins. “It was thrilling to see this first win and to see the team compete. We were able to play everyone.”
Giana Fagone scored the lone goal for Portland/Deering, while two netminders combined on 18 saves.
