FREEPORT – In terms of local artists showing their works at the Freeport Community Library, Catherine Breer was a pioneer.
Thirteen years ago, Breer was amassing a collection of her landscape paintings. A friend suggested showcasing them for sale at the library. And so it began.
“It wasn’t a really popular thing to do,” Breer said. “Now they have a waiting list. It’s a great space because there’s a lot of light and there are big spaces, and my paintings are big.”
Breer’s 13th show at the Freeport Community Library began on Dec. 2, and continues through Dec. 30. The opening reception is scheduled on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 5-7 p.m.
She contributes 10 percent of the proceeds from sales to the library. It’s a typical gesture for Breer, a member of the Freeport High School Facilities Committee, who donates proceeds from the sale of her calendars to provide a student citizen scholarship, mini grants to teachers and other school causes.
A copy of her painting, “The Path Most Traveled,” hangs in the library. It depicts the path from the library to Freeport Middle School.
“I have two children, and they walked that path many times,” she said.
Breer works closely on her show with Belinda Stewart, events coordinator at the library.
“I really do have a special place in my heart for the library,” Breer said.
Stewart said that the relationship between Breer and the library has been a good one.
“It’s been a long and very mutually pleasant relationship,” Stewart said. “It’s wonderful to have local artists show their works at the library. The community enjoys coming and seeing local artists here.”
Breer has lived in Freeport since 1995. The daughter of Methodist missionaries, she spent her childhood years in Korea.
She studied art at both the Atlanta College School of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Breer later spent time as a graphic designer. She and Annie Darling, business partner at Annie/Catherine Inc., produce a wide range of products, including Breer’s calendars and Darling’s note cards and designer stationery.
“I do graphic designing a little, because it’s hard to make a living as an artist,” she said. “We’ve grown it into a pretty good business over the years. We’re in a lot of good stores, including L.L. Bean.”
Regarding her paintings, Breer favors contrasts.
“It’s fairly representational, but it’s very graphic,” she said. “I love light and shadow. I love painting water – light bouncing off the water. I find that very interesting. I just love all the reflections that you see.”
“Googan Island” is one of the Catherine Breer paintings that will be on display at the Freeport Community Library through Dec. 30.
