Man, 77, shoots himself in abdomen at firing range

A 77-year-old man was seriously injured when he accidentally shot himself Saturday at the Scarborough Fish & Game firing range at 79 Homes Road in Scarborough, police said.

Police Sgt. Timothy Barker said the man was alone at the range when he shot himself in the abdomen with a .22-caliber handgun at 10:55 a.m. Saturday. Barker said the man managed to call the police and report the shooting.

Barker said the man was taken by Scarborough Fire and Rescue to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was immediately sent into surgery.

Scarborough police said Saturday night they had no further information on the incident, including the man’s name and his condition.

Barker said the accident is under investigation.

Three-vehicle crash closes Route 35 for about 2 hours

Traffic on Route 35 in Standish was shut down in both directions Saturday afternoon after a traffic accident near Middle Jam Road.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said there were minor injuries.

A county dispatcher said three vehicles were involved in the 1:40 p.m. accident and traffic was blocked for about two hours.

Officials at the sheriff’s office and Standish Fire and Rescue said no additional information was available Saturday night.

LEWISTON

Local woman gets 10 years in prison for selling cocaine

A Lewiston woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on cocaine trafficking charges.

Police said 27-year-old Tanya Cahill was sentenced Friday, after pleading guilty.

Police said Cahill and a man were arrested in August on the Maine Turnpike near Gray with $25,000 worth of crack cocaine in a vehicle. They said the pair was bringing the drugs from Boston to Lewiston, the Sun Journal newspaper reported.
